like we don’t know who the liars really are…

i just read this really good op-ed piece by maureen dowd, someone i don’t always like very much.  i think she’s bizarrely obsessed with the clintons, and frequently sexist, and it isn’t unusual for her to seem either crazy or drunk in her articles.  but yesterday’s article is right on, and it was a relief for me to read.  in it, she writes out loud what most of us know, and have said to ourselves or each other: wilson’s outburst during obama’s speech the other night was about race, plain and simple.  not that race is ever plain and simple… but taking into account the fact that obama was not, in fact, lying when he said that his health care plan does not cover illegal immigrants, people might do well to trust their gut instincts on this, and own up to our race sh!t.  and it does a progressive good, to read something by a privileged, white woman that puts it out there.

as a therapist, d frequently throws around psych terms when it comes not just to her clients or even our friends and family, but also about world leaders, politicians, athletes, fictional characters… you name it.  although we haven’t had the conversation explicitly, i can tell you she would definitely say that joe wilson was projecting!

i can’t say i’m shedding light on a subject that hasn’t been talked to death, but i do really recommend dowd’s piece.

  1. South Carolina has a long list of dignitaries that includes Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant contestant), Board of Education Chair, Kristin Maguire, Governor (and avid Appalachian hiker), Mark Sanford and now Joe “the hater not a debater” Wilson or the “screamer not the dreamer” as others have dubbed him. I did enjoy him cut and running through his apology, which only goes to show that he stands for nothing. He is just another good old boy where in the morning these married men preach to you that there should be prayer in our schools and in the evening they are on their cell phones setting up a date with their other women on the side, hypocrisy has been bred in. I am not surprised that he felt compel to yell like he was at some Friday night game. So long Joey, you too will be seeing the unemployment lines.

  2. Good article. Thanks for sharing.
